Listening: YouTube

Image
YouTube is one of  my favorite tools.  You can learn anything on YouTube, right?  I've using it a lot during my days. Every morning I start with a few videos for my mindset.  Most mornings I start listening to this gratitude affirmations video while I'm still in bed.  It really helps me start my day, even when I'm having a hard time facing my circumstances.  Gratitude practices are my favorite spiritual habit.    A while ago I watched a  video about a woman who was very broke and then achieved financial abundance, and her advice about how to think about money really resonated with me and inspired this post. She talks about creating a good home for money, like you are being a good partner to money.  Don't ignore money.  Don't be mad at money.  Don't talk badly to money.  Instead, connect with money, spend time with your money, and take an interest in money.  Guilty!  I avoid looking at my bank account....

Income Streams

Image
This post is a bit of a brain dump of all the revenue streams I can foresee creating in the mid-term future for myself.  Then I'll have some accountability following up on all my ideas.  Some of these ideas will be good ones, and some will be dead ends.    Since my daughter was born, I've been struggling to re-create a career.  My training is in math and programming. I have a BA in Math.  I worked two corporate jobs programming predictive statistics for banking and then for retail.  Then I spent 18 years self employed as a statistical programmer supporting cancer research. After I had my daughter, I was left with significant brain damage that made it harder to program.  I kept trying with help from my dad, for whom I was subcontracting, but then the pandemic happened.  Funding was diverted to focus on Covid research.  Hospitals were too overwhelmed to run experimental studies.  My dad decided to retire.  First, I sta...

The New Art of Living

Image
https://join.robinhood.com/meghanw-b3a2b2  The universe provides.  Here I am, declaring to the void that I am committed to learning to be great with money, and my friend Conor calls me asking if I'd be interested in some free education about building and managing wealth.  Yes.  Yes, I'm interested.  Conor has started working with Wealth Builders .  They offer a program called The New Art of Living .  It's based on three philosophies.   First, they encourage " multi-handed income ", which is income based on implementing a system rather than working as a single person trading hours for money.  Some examples are earning money from investments, earning royalties, or owning a business where a system can be implemented and run without you being there to do it.  I hear it as creating that elusive passive income stream we all fantasize about.  For me, I see this kind of opportunity in creating digital or print-on-demand products , col...

Debt Consolidation

Image
I am on the phone with a debt consolidation consultant right now.  His name is Jon Foley , and he was recommended by someone in Business Debtor Anonymous .  I had to sign up for their credit reporting service, Smart Credit, which costs $25/month.  I paid it for now, and I'll need to remember to cancel it.  Actually, Jon says he'll check back in with me before the next month and help me cancel it.    I have an American Express card with a balance of $10,000-ish that isn't on my credit report.  So does that mean that I don't owe it?  It sounds like they have a window to pursue the debt after the business is officially dissolved.  I will make sure the paperwork is all correct with WA state to officially dissolve the business.   Since it's not showing on my credit report, Jon says that I'm not a personal guarantor of the debt.    With AmEx, I accepted their offer to enroll in their program to help me.  The terms of ...

How did I get here?

Image
My name is Meg.  I'm already feeling my emotions well up as I begin to type about how I lost enough money to put me at the brink of bankruptcy.  This blog is about my recovery, real time.  My goal right now is to get back on my feet and be able to take care of myself and my daughter comfortably.   Long story short, I started a business that failed.  I wanted to save the planet with public transportation to recreation.  I bought a fleet of old school buses and started running routes on a regular schedule with individual ticket sales to the ski areas in the winter and to the mountains for hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing in the summer and out to The Gorge Amphitheater for all their concerts.   I think the business itself would have done well, but I made more than one disastrous hiring decision.  All in, I lost about a quarter million dollars, all in debt I took on.  Some of it was money from friends and family (thank...
